There's the Harry Hole series, which more or less defines Jo Nesbø - no question about that. The Night House is my second foray into his work outside the bestselling world of crime fiction. The first was The Jealous Man and Other Stories, which I didn't particularly enjoy. By comparison, I have to admit that I quite enjoyed what at first appears to be a terrifying tale about a haunted house.
The book is divided into three parts: the first a seemingly straightforward foray into supernatural horror - only to be turned on its head by the second, and then twisted again in the third and final act.
What begins as a chilling tale of a missing boy turns into something much morestranger. The genre expectations are all there - starting with a classic horror-like setup, only to steer deeper into psychological territory.
